Etching by James Gillray from the original intercepted drawing. This caricature shows the unfortunate predicament of some of the men from General Kleber's garrison after they alighting a column during Napoleon's campaign in Egypt. A group of Bedouin Arabs have gathered beneath the column and set fire to it, rendering useless all of the French garrison's superior warfare defences. A balloon and and parachute at the top right of the image illustrate the nation's scientific achievements. Published by H Humphrey of 27 St James' Street, London on 6 March 1799.
